Dear moms and dads! Since it’s winter, it’s quite cold and it’s getting dark very early these days, I thought I’d write about another indoor place where you can take your children to and escape the home routine for a little while. If you’ve been living in Oslo for some time now, you’ll probably know about it already. But if you’re new to the city you might find it quite useful.
Mathallen is a modern, gourmet food hall in Grünerløkka, located right next to Akerselva. it’s a big indoor market that has been renovated and hosts lots of small restaurants and food stores. Many products sold there are ecological and locally produced. You’ll find anything from fresh vegetables to fish, meat, bread, cheeses, pasta, etc. The food stalls are quite international and new ones keep popping up all the time. There are Asian, Indian, Spanish, Italian, French and of course Scandinavian options, between others.
Some restaurants have their own tables, but if you prefer there is plenty of sitting space in the middle. They’ve made it quite nicely with long eating tables and some cozy pallet benches. I find it really baby and toddler-friendly, since there’s plenty of space to park your stroller and for the kids to walk around. They also have high chairs available and the bathrooms downstairs have changing tables.
The best time to go there is during weekdays, specially in the mornings, since it’s pretty empty. It’s a great place to meet other mums or even organize your barselgruppe meeting, since it’s big and fits a lot of strollers. If your baby is really young you can have them next to you on the pallet bench and if they’re on crawling or walking phases you might want to let them wander around the tables. I would avoid it during the weekends though, unless you can wrap your baby and leave the pram at home. It gets quite packed!
I like to take Thea there sometimes for a morning snack around 10. I get a coffee, she gets juice and we share a bolle (well, I eat 90% and she gets the rest usually ;). It feels like a cozy daughter-mother moment that I think we both really enjoy. She loves to walk around the differents food stalls, look at the tall ceilings and climb the pallet benches. I have to run after her more than once, of course, but I manage to sit down every now and then and enjoy my coffee. I also like to walk around with her and show her all those fresh vegetables, explain her what color they are, where they come from and what they’re called.
Hope you like it as much as I do :)!
